(And they have been.) Unfortunately, the design of Perl 5 makes it quite difficult to optimize in a number of ways. This is one of the reasons we started working on Perl 6; there’s just a lot of historical baggage you can’t fix without breaking backward compatibility in several ways simultaneously.

You slowly kill Perl5 by not optimizing it.
